Song Di was born in Mouping, Shandong province, in 1945. He is now a professor at the Central Institute of Arts and Crafts.
He learned to paint from Li Kuchan before entering the Beijing Institute of Arts in 1963. He majored in figures in the traditional Chinese style and flowers-and-birds in the Gongbi style. Song loves landscapes and tends to present the tranquility, vastness and beauty of nature. He tries to shake off the conventional traditional framework and takes pain to do the composition and shapes. While paying attention to matching the cold and warm colors characterized in the western style of painting, he persists in the Chinese way of wielding the brush in an attempt to change the effect. His attempt has been widely accepted outside China. For many times, he went to Japan on visit or lecture tours and exhibited his works there. He also held a tour exhibition of his works in Germany.
