Song Yu-hui was born in 1966 and is native of Anshan, Liaoning province. Song developed a strong interest in painting since his youth. He began to practice sketching and watercolour at the age of 5 to 6 and his artistic talent was already apparent. As a young man, Song was curious about everything around him, especially natural creatures. His sensibility and observation power is later seen as the reason for his accomplishment in animal portraits. Song enrolled in Liaoning Arts and Crafts College and became a designer at a printing company after graduation. Starting from 1988, Song began to release a series of comic strips, which was selected for exhibition and publication. By 1995, his works had already showed a relatively distinct style. From 1996 to 2000, Song, after profound exploration and research in art, finally found an integrated approach which was solidly based on the eminent tradition of the East and the modern realist school of colouring and modeling. After exhibitions in Hong Kong, South East Asia, and mainland China, Song's works have caught the attention of art circles and collectors. He has also been acclaimed as one of the contemporary young painters with very high artistic potential. Song specializes in animal and human portraits. His natural creatures and human portraits are full of distinct characters and feelings. His colouring is superb and his strokes are delicate and multifarious. With the use of complex ink-and-wash and colouring, his elegant works have a strong Oriental flavor.
